Serafino Rivella Barbaresco Montestefano 2016

A tiny cult producer of Barbaresco at the Montestefano cru. Everything at the winery is done by Teobaldo, his wife Maria (their son Baldo helps too) – they are entirely hands on and make just two wines – the Barbaresco Montestefano and a Dolcetto d’Alba. The Montestefano parcel is next to his house, and he tends it, “come il mio giardino” (as my own little garden) – meticulously. Since the beginning, the vines have been farmed organically and the wine is made in the basement of the property – they are truly the definition of old-school, and we say – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

A deep, warm, fruit-driven nose composed of sweet and sour cherries, potpourri and spice sets the scene, but in the mouth it’s a decidedly different beast – more powerful, darker and more sinister. Pipe tobacco, pine cones and forest floor add layers of flavour and a tannic tartness is immediate and ever-present. Pass the bistecca.
